Pickup truck erupts into flames at Cobblestone Fiesta

A pickup truck caught fire, burning briefly and brightly in 112-degree heat in the parking lot of the Cobblestone Fiesta late this afternoon. The fire prompted a swift response from emergency crews and the evacuation of a nearby business.

Phoenix Regional Dispatch reported the vehicle fire at the intersection of Smith-Enke Road and John Wayne Parkway at 4:24 p.m. Reporters arrived on scene two minutes later to find Maricopa Fire Ladder Tender 571 already working to contain the blaze.

The bed of the truck, parked in a parking space directly in front of the MomDoc clinic, was fully engulfed in flames and spewing thick black smoke. Firefighters activated a hose line at 4:30 p.m., shortly after staff members from the clinic were evacuated as a precaution.

Crews knocked down most of the flames within 10 minutes, though persistent fire continued to burn inside the truck’s back seat. Firefighters could be seen directing water through the truck’s cab to suppress the remaining hotspots.

The vehicle was unoccupied, according to Maricopa’s public safety spokesperson, Monica Williams, and no one was injured in the fire. There were no reports of significant traffic disruptions, though authorities cordoned off the southern side of the plaza’s parking lot.

The “fire is out now,” Williams said at 4:41 p.m. She confirmed the fire started in the bed.

Last year, smoke evacuated medical offices at the adjacent Maricopa Professional Village.
