A third kid, 16, has been arrested with ties to Meadows homicide

Maricopa Police Department told InMaricopa today that a third child has been arrested in connection with the shooting that killed 16-year-old Esteban Valenzuela in the Maricopa Meadows last month.

The police made the first two arrests Nov. 27 — two juveniles were taken into custody during a SWAT-assisted search of a Villages home and a high-risk traffic stop at the Sonoran Creek Marketplace.

Citing an ongoing investigation, police continued to withhold specific details about the charges this morning.

The department today confirmed it arrested a 16-year-old boy on Wednesday, the third arrest tied to the late November apparent homicide.

“That individual is a minor, so we cannot release their information,” MPD spokesperson Monica Williams said of the more recent arrestee. “The charges are still being finalized.”

Police responded to the 45000 block of West Dirk Street just before 7:15 p.m. Nov. 22, where they found the shot teen and transported him to a local hospital, where he died.

“Details are still emerging, but initial reports indicate that the incident involved a group of juveniles and young adults,” according to a police statement released Nov. 28. “There was an altercation, and a firearm was discharged, tragically striking and fatally wounding one of the juveniles.”

The incident is still under investigation, Williams said.
