More details are emerging in connection with Monday’s drive-by shooting in the 45000 block of W. Ed Green Lane in Maricopa.

The Maricopa Police Department began receiving calls about 8:15 p.m. Monday evening about a subject in a dark colored Nissan sedan who opened fire on three teenage boys who were standing in the front yard of a residence on W. Ed Green Lane. One of the victims was struck in the abdomen and remains in critical condition at Chandler Regional Hospital, while the other, who was struck in the shoulder and right pinky, was treated, and released. None of the injuries were considered life-threatening.

About 1:20 p.m. Wednesday, Maricopa Police Detectives, along with Arizona Department of Public Safety, Pinal County Sheriff’s Office and Casa Grande Police officers, arrested 21-year-old Kalib Rogers at his apartment on O’Neil Dr. in Casa Grande in connection with the incident. Rogers was booked into the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office Detention Facility and is awaiting arraignment on charges including two counts of first-degree attempted murder; drive-by shooting; discharge of a firearm at a structure; endangerment; and criminal trespass.

According to police documents, when officers arrived at the scene of the shooting Monday, they found a bullet hole in the wall of the home in which the two victims were hiding, and another bullet hole in the home next door – a home that was occupied by 10 people. A third bullet hole was found in the front bumper of a car parked on the street. Police found six spent 9mm shell casings in the road along with another 9mm bullet with no casing.

MPD said multiple witnesses described the suspect vehicle as a dark 4-door sedan. Video surveillance showed a vehicle matching that description leaving the neighborhood at the time of the shooting.

Police documentation states that, during the investigation, it was learned that one of the victims had been in a relationship with a relative of Rogers. That relative alleged that on Friday, Nov. 12 the shooting victim in question had sexually assaulted her, and she had been threatening to kill him in Snapchat posts since the alleged incident.

The investigation also determined that Rogers had confronted one of the victims with a gun near his home while walking to school the morning of the shooting.

According to police documents, one victim identified Rogers as the shooter during a police interview on Tuesday, and at that time also informed police that Rogers’ relative was in the car with him at the time the victim was threatened on the way to school.

After identifying possible residence for Rogers, detectives from the Arizona State Gang Task Force conducted surveillance on the residence and confirmed the presence of a vehicle matching the description of the vehicle at the shooting location at the residence. The car, a dark blue Nissan Altima, was registered to Enterprise rental and police confirmed through Enterprise that the car had been rented to Kalib Rogers.

On Wednesday, members of the MPD Criminal Investigations Unit served a search warrant and arrested Rogers at his apartment in Casa Grande. Contents of the home included one 9mm round, one Springfield 9mm clip and a Springfield Armory gun box.

The rented Altima also was found in the parking lot and impounded by MPD as evidence.
