It only took a few raindrops yesterday before cars collided in the city of Maricopa.
Maricopa Police Department around noon today released the cause and nature of injuries in the two-car crash that blocked a major intersection for an hour yesterday afternoon, just minutes after it started to rain for the first time in 147 days.
The police responded to the intersection of John Wayne Parkway and Hathaway Avenue around 1:45 p.m. after a newer gray Honda Odyssey SUV and a turn-of-the-century teal Ford Mustang collided. Airbags deployed in both vehicles.
“A vehicle failed to yield the right of way when turning left in front of another vehicle,” said the police spokeswoman, Monica Williams. It was not immediately clear which vehicle was at fault.
“Minor injuries were reported,” Williams said. “The roadway was impacted for approximately an hour before all lanes reopened.”
Between September and October, the John Wayne-Hathaway intersection was the site of at least three major crashes (this one, this one and this one), two of which ended in hospitalizations.
Last month, MPD arrested Jessica J. Guevara Reyes, 30, at that intersection after she allegedly drove drunkenly through a power pole and residential chain-link fence on that corner while her young child was in the car.
