After a week in the hospital, Maricopa Police Officer Sebastian Sanchez is home and recovering. Sanchez is the officer shot by Keith Prock in last week’s shootout at the Circle K near Alterra.
Pinal County’s Special Investigative Unit released new details this morning.
Prock was a known violent felon and spotted at the Circle K just before 2:50 p.m. last Thursday. When police officers approached Prock, he fled across the front of the store and shot Sanchez several times.
In body camera footage released the day after the shooting, Sanchez can be heard shouting “stop, man,” several times before Prock pulls the handgun. The body camera footage shows Prock shoot Sanchez, who falls to the ground.
“Oh, Jesus! Somebody help,” cries Sanchez as other officers continue the chase, gunning down Prock and running him over. “I’m hit.”
Prock was pronounced dead at the scene.
The chaotic scene played out just 20 minutes after schools let out. This gas station, within eyeshot of a high school campus, is a popular afterschool spot for kids to stop.
Investigators say Prock was a known gang member and had a long history of violence.
“This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers our officers face every day to keep our
community safe,” said Maricopa Police Chief Mark Goodman in a statement. “Our department is like a family, so when one of us is hurt, we all feel it. Thankfully, our officer survived, and their prognosis is positive. However, they sustained serious injuries that will take time to heal.”
Sanchez is a longtime member of the department. He works in patrol on the motorcycle unit. InMaricopa photographed Sanchez last summer during a ride-along and again during a drunk driving prevention presentation for high schoolers.
The investigation into the shootout the Circle K is still ongoing.
