If the planets align, a new grocery store will make its way to Maricopa.

In emails obtained from the city, Phoenix-based Empirita Development said WinCo Foods is mulling setting up shop at Maricopa Station if Lowe’s drops out.

“In the event that Lowe’s decides not to locate in Maricopa, we are in current negotiations with Winco, who have been attracted to Maricopa by citizens letters asking them to put a store in Maricopa,” read a document from the developer on March 9.

However, City Manager Rick Horst said any decision may still be a long way away.

“The last time the city was in communication with WinCo, they were not quite ready to come into our city,” Horst said Tuesday.

He did not clarify when that conversation took place.

If WinCo opts to come to Maricopa, it would join Bashas’, Fry’s Marketplace, Sprouts Farmers Market and Walmart as grocery options in town.

Such an event would no doubt delight locals.

After InMaricopa reported whispers of a second Dutch Bros Coffee yesterday, one city resident, Sue Weiss, commented, “Now can a Winco be built next door to the new Dutch Bros? Win, win, in my book!”

Currently, the nearest Winco sits 22 miles north of town in Chandler.
