Desert Sunrise principal’s resignation involved sexual harassment

Desert Sunrise High School Principal Marlene Armstrong’s April resignation came after she was the subject of a sexual harassment investigation, a Maricopa Unified School District officials confirms.

Sources inside the high school told InMaricopa the sexual harassment involved a male teacher who was inappropriately touched, groped and verbally harassed at work.

“Upon learning of the situation, we promptly initiated an investigation following our established procedures and took appropriate follow-up action,” said MUSD spokesperson Mishell Terry last night.

Terry said the district “takes all allegations of sexual harassment very seriously.”

“We are committed to providing a safe and respectful environment for all our staff and students,” Terry said. “The district continuously works to implement and reinforce policies and training designed to prevent harassment and ensure a supportive workplace.”

Desert Sunrise is MUSD’s newest school.

Former Assistant Principal Phillip Verdugo has taken over as acting principal. People involved in the alleged sexual assault as victims and witnesses say Verdugo is a “perfect fit” at the school.
