A two-vehicle crash shut down Maricopa’s major thoroughfare, prompting a large emergency response and causing significant traffic delays.
The crash occurred at 2:10 p.m. at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and John Wayne Parkway, where a similar collision occurred last month. The road is still closed.
Emergency crews, including two fire trucks and an ambulance, responded to the scene. Pinal County Sheriff’s deputies were also present, interviewing drivers involved in the wreck.
At least two vehicles were involved, including a gray Nissan Rogue SUV with deployed airbags and severe side impact damage. An older model gold Ford Focus had major front-end damage. At two drivers were being evaluated by fire personnel while several other drivers and passengers were being interviewed by law enforcement.
Northbound lanes of John Wayne Parkway are closed, and traffic is being rerouted through the Copper Sky Complex via MLK Boulevard.
No details were immediately available on the number of injuries or the cause of the crash. An investigation is “actively being handled right now,” said an MPD spokesperson at 2:30 p.m.
An ambulance remains on scene.
