With a new month comes a new vice mayor.
Sitting Vice Mayor Amber Liermann will nominate her successor during tomorrow’s Maricopa City Council meeting, a role she called “an honor” ingrained with a large amount of trust.
“I see it as the mayor and council trusting you with additional responsibilities and duties, so it was a really great experience,” she told InMaricopa today.
Liermann was nominated for the city’s second-highest office last year by then-Vice Mayor Rich Vitiello, who said she was “a woman who has done her job not only for us but for our children in our schools.”
It’s a time-consuming position, according to Councilmember Vincent Manfredi. He served as vice mayor from 2021 to 2022.
“It’s more work than just being a council member. When the mayor is not available, you are the mayor,” he said. “The vice mayor goes to a lot of different events, talks to the people and does speeches and ribbon cuttings if the mayor is not available.”
Liermann similarly called the role “quite a time commitment.”
They’re quite right.
The position is a one-year term in which a council member is responsible for performing mayoral duties in the mayor’s absence, according to the city code. This includes attending local, regional and state meetings if the mayor is unable to attend.
And although Liermann said she did not want to disclose her nomination until the meeting, she said the council member “has a passion to build a real sense of community and connectedness.”
“This person cares very much for their community members and is a servant at heart,” she said. “They make themselves available and serves our community selflessly. I think they’ll be great for the community and for council, too.”
