With a lot of help from the Maricopa Police Department, we’ve parsed out the important details in a pair of shootings that occurred just hours and two streets apart in Rancho Mirage. They were unrelated. (Read all about the other one here.)

A 22-year-old man was arrested Tuesday night after allegedly threatening a group of neighbors, physically assaulting one of them and firing a gun during a tense confrontation near the intersection of Padilla Street and Piccolo Drive.

According to police reports, the incident began around 8:30 p.m. May 14 when officers were dispatched to a home on Padilla Street following a 911 call about a man threatening residents with a firearm. Officers surrounded the residence and spoke to multiple victims, who said that Davie Ray Lane, a Piccolo Drive resident, had confronted them after seeing one of them at a Rancho Mirage park.

The situation escalated quickly.

According to witness accounts, Lane demanded to speak with one of the victims and threatened to shoot them and their dog if denied. When the group refused and closed the door, Lane allegedly returned minutes later and began verbally assailing all seven victims, including several named in police reports.

As the argument continued and the group began to disperse, Lane allegedly struck one victim in the face, prompting a physical struggle. He then pulled out a pistol and reportedly threatened to shoot a female, possibly a child. Witnesses told police Lane counted to three before firing a round into the ground, with multiple people — including people whose names were redacted in a way that suggests they are children— standing nearby.

While detaining Lane, officers said he admitted to firing the weapon. A subsequent consensual search of his house revealed a firearm in the garage and a spent .22 caliber casing inside the chamber. Surveillance footage from a neighbor’s home appeared to show Lane firing the weapon into the ground near several people.

Police later confirmed Lane had an outstanding warrant in Maricopa City Court for a separate offense.

Lane was arrested just before 9 p.m. and transported to the Pinal County Adult Detention Center. He faces multiple felony charges including three counts of aggravated assault, endangerment, unlawful discharge of a firearm, threatening and intimidating, and seven counts of disorderly conduct.

No injuries from the gunfire were reported.
