PCSO investigating masked bus stop stranger

Pinal County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a contact between a masked man and a 6- and 9-year-old at a bus stop in Hidden Valley this afternoon.

The two kids told police they were walking home from the bus stop at West Papago Road and Pecan Woods Boulevard in the Amarillo Creek neighborhood when they were approached by a light skinned male with a black hoodie and black mask, an email from Maricopa Unified School District to all parents stated.

The 9-year-old reportedly yelled for the younger child before the stranger ran off.

“PCSO is currently looking for and reviewing security camera video from the area, checking with sex offenders nearby, and speaking with the students and any witnesses,” the MUSD statement read. “Once video evidence is secured and reviewed, we will provide additional updates.”

It’s the second incident of concerning behavior at a local bus stop this month. Maricopa Police Department submitted charges against a Gilbert man accused of masturbating in front of a 14-year-old at a stop in Rancho El Dorado Aug. 15.

“We understand this news may be concerning, and we want to ensure that everyone is aware and prepared,” the school district stated about the most recent event.

Advice for kids:

  • Never go anywhere with someone you don’t know.
  • Stay away from adults asking for help.
  • Don’t let strangers into your home.
  • If you feel uncomfortable or scared, walk away.
  • If someone grabs you, act quickly.
  • When riding your bike, keep the bike between you and the adult.

Advice for parents:

  • Supervise your children closely when they are outside your home or at the park.
  • Ensure all outdoor activities are monitored.
  • Teach your children to use any phone to call 911 in case of an emergency.
  • Empower your children to say “no” if something feels wrong or makes them uncomfortable.
  • Update your child’s photo regularly. Take a photo at least once a year, and more frequently if they are under 5 years old.
