Maricopa City Council incumbents have starkly outperformed two challengers, Chrystal O’Jon and Le’On Willis, in a five-way race for three seats, according to the latest election results from Pinal County.
InMaricopa has called the race for Vice Mayor Amber Liermann, Councilmembers Bob Marsh and Eric Goettl.
Liermann retained more than 26% of votes, the highest share among the five candidates. Marsh and Goettl each earned 23% support.
O’Jon trailed behind at 14% and Willis, who was busted in May posing as an Air Force veteran despite never serving in the military, had the worst outing at 11%.
“I would love to thank everyone in the community for their support,” Liermann told InMaricopa today. “Talking with pollsters and voters yesterday, they spoke of a responsibility at the local level to really show up, advocate and work hard to alleviate some of the burden from the national stressors. It really encouraged me.”
Goettl said he’s still awaiting final results but offered his gratitude to Maricopa voters.
“While there are many votes yet to be counted, I just wanted to say how grateful I am for the strong show of support I received from the community yesterday,” he told InMaricopa. “Yesterday was the democracy part of our Republic … Democracy only works when we have choices to choose from.”
Marsh said he looks forward to “keeping the band together.”
“I’m very excited to have another four years to work with our awesome team on city council,” he said. “During the campaign, we three had been joking about keeping the band together. I’m glad we got our wish.”
A July 13 InMaricopa poll of 304 voters correctly predicted Liermann would win the most votes, followed by Marsh and Goettl respectively. The poll accurately suggested challengers would underperform with Willis finishing dead last.
