An officer-involved shooting in Tortosa Wednesday morning was the result of three people breaking into cars, according to Maricopa police.

The incident’s circumstances according to Maricopa Police Department:  

At about 1:30 a.m., Maricopa police responded to a report of three people breaking into vehicles near the block of 36100 West Seville Drive. The caller told police they followed the suspects until the suspects threatened to shoot them. 

When officers arrived, they saw the three people breaking into a vehicle near West Madrid Avenue. Officers approached the suspects, who fled on foot. 

One of the suspects, a teenage male, ran west and was apprehended. The two other suspects climbed a wall near a home and ran into the fields north of the property. Two Maricopa police officers pursued on foot. 

During the pursuit, a suspect opened fire striking one of the officers. The officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries and remains hospitalized in stable condition. 

The second officer returned fire, striking one of the suspects. The suspect died en route to the hospital. 

The third suspect was placed in cuffs without further incident. 

Due to the location where the shooting took place, on the Gila River Indian Community, the FBI will be conducting the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
