Chandler-based Someburros has submitted a full development package to the City of Maricopa that reveals detailed architectural, landscaping and site plans for a drive-thru restaurant at Stonegate.

The documents, submitted May 21, show a 3,519-square-foot building with indoor dining, a 400-square-foot covered patio and a one-lane drive-thru at the northwest corner of Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway and Stonegate Road.

The project has been on the city’s radar since late last year when the Mexican food chain was first listed in planning documents. The restaurant and drive-thru would both operate daily from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., said project manager John Barclay of Tempe-based Upward Architects.

A new floorplan shows 17 indoor dining tables and seven more tables on the covered patio.

Building elevations show parapets up to 25 feet tall, a mix of stucco and brick veneer, clerestory windows with frosted glazing and patio shade structures supported by wood columns. Exterior paint colors are brown, grey and white with accents of matte black metal and concrete wainscot.

The landscaping plan calls for native and desert-adapted plants such as ironwood, bougainvillea and agave, surrounded by decomposed granite. The plantings comply with city visibility and low-water-use standards.

Someburros, the family-owned Arizona restaurant group, has operated in the Valley since 1986. The brand was founded by the Vasquez family, who previously ran the popular Poncho’s Mexican Food in South Phoenix. According to the company’s website, Someburros specializes in Sonoran-style dishes based on family recipes passed down from matriarch Eusebia Vasquez — including burros, tacos, enchiladas and breakfast items. The chain now has more than a dozen locations across metro Phoenix and in Flagstaff.

Maricopa marks the restaurant’s second location in Pinal County (there’s one at Gantzel and Combs Roads in San Tan Valley).

The project is located on a 1¼-acre lot within the Stonegate development. A new dental clinic, a Starbucks and a business labeled “Oil Express” are also planned on an adjacent parcel. The parcel was part of a successful replat request May 6 to increase the number of lots from three to four in that area.

Also planned for the corner of Stonegate and MCG is a Buffalo Wild Wings, although there hasn’t been any movement on that sit-down sports bar in nearly a year.

The Someburros design package will now go under city review. A construction timeline has not been disclosed. The Maricopa location does not appear on the Someburros website yet, although the fast-growing eatery advertises that another location is “coming soon” in Buckeye.
