Looking for a fin-tastic time with your family this weekend?
With Stagecoach Days officially underway today, Maricopa’s Family Fishing Derby is returning Sunday to Pacana Park after six long years.
Once a popular annual event, the derby has returned and is open to children ages 5 to 18 for an afternoon of fishing and friendly competition. Kids get 1½ hours to catch and release as many fish as possible in their age group.
“It’s a fun, family-friendly way to spend the day, whether you’re an experienced angler or casting a line for the very first time,” said Nick Brooks, events and sponsorship coordinator for the city. “We want families to enjoy the outdoors together, meet new people and share in a bit of friendly competition that helps strengthen our sense of community.”
Priscilla Behnke, a co-founder of Be Awesome Youth Coalition who serves on the Maricopa Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee, said the event isn’t “just about catching fish.”
“When families spend time together and connect with their community, it helps build a healthier, stronger Maricopa,” Behnke said.
It costs $10 to participate. The entry fee includes a pole, bait, entry and hot dog. Children 10 and older, however, must have a valid Arizona fishing license supplied through Arizona Game and Fish.
