The Maricopa Planning and Zoning Commission reviewed permit requests last night for development at APEX Motor Club and Southbridge Marketplace. Commissioners did not make any decisions or approvals.
Planning and Zoning Manager Rick Williams said the purpose of the meeting was to give commissioners and the public an opportunity “to view and speak on the developments themselves.”
APEX Motor Club garages
The private car club plans to construct four more buildings at its facility on State Route 238, adding 48 garage condos that double as storage and maintenance space for luxury cars. Each unit will measure about 1,250 square feet, as well as a 625-square-foot mezzanine for additional storage or hangouts.
APEX currently has four garage condos next to the raceway.
Commissioners asked for clarification on water supply and “appropriate waste handling procedures.”
Planner Alexander Bosworth said the car club has an onsite water supply but there are plans in the works to eventually extend waterlines along SR 238. He also confirmed the site will continue to provide waste service for the additional garages.

Southbridge shops and restaurants
Retail space, restaurants and, of course, grocery stores always top the list of places Maricopans want to see make a new home in the city. Southbridge Marketplace North, located just northwest of Lowe’s Home Improvement, will add at least five more shops to the area.
This includes the much-anticipated Aldi, as well as retail stores and restaurants. Planner Derek Scheerer said at least one of the buildings has the square footage available to be split between seven shops, “depending on the tenant improvements and what ultimately is installed there.”
As for the next steps in the process, Williams told InMaricopa “it’s hard to say” what the timeline currently looks like for the shopping center.
“They need to get site plan approval and, once they do, they’ll be able to go into their construction drawing phase,” he said. “But it’s a guess. It could be three to six months [after site plan approval] to be able to start pulling building permits.”
