‘Combination of expenses’ dooms ice cream shop

The only place to get 31 flavors of ice cream in Maricopa closed Wednesday.

The Baskin Robbins franchise restaurant, 20924 N. John Wayne Parkway, operated in Maricopa for eight years.

“I’m very passionate about Maricopa,” owner Tammy Adams said. “I think that’s why I stayed open longer than I should.”

“For eight years the store wasn’t able to make money, even with investing everything back into the company,” Adams said. “It was a combination of all the expenses. Everyone focuses on the rent, but that was only a portion (of why the store failed).”

“As far as a brick and mortar business, that was the last I’ll have in Maricopa, but I support it by working in real estate,” Adams said.

Adams said the people of Maricopa should continue to support locally owned stores to promote the growth of the city. Working in real estate, she said, allows her to do just that.

“Please continue to shop your local businesses, but especially your locally owned ones. They need your business more than you will ever know,” Adams said.

The 31 Flavors Facebook posted this parting message:

“My team and I want to thank you all for your loyalty and support. You have no idea how many tears were shed behind the counter or the walls as we saw some of our favorite families visit us for the last time.”
