Dozens of country fans flooded Central Arizona College’s Maricopa campus Thursday night to see local recording artist Laura Walsh.

Walsh recently received her “golden ticket” on FOX’s reality show “American Idol.” Fans are taking advantage of the opportunity to see the budding star in concert before she travels to Los Angeles in hopes of progressing on the show.

“I’m really excited to be the headliner of this concert,” Walsh told InMaricopa in an interview last week. “It’s exciting to be a headliner for my hometown and county, and I’m excited to see who shows up and to see how it goes.”

Walsh performed some original songs for the crowd, but also showed her range by performing hits such as “Sugar, We’re Going Down” by Fall Out Boy and “Miss Independent” by Kelly Clarkson.

“I try to add authenticity to my shows,” Walsh said. “That was my word for last year, ‘authenticity.’ I see it a lot with different national acts I’ve seen and been around. One think I noticed was they think outside the box. So one thing I wanted to do was be courageous this year and add in some songs that were really influential on me.”

Walsh will be back on stage on Friday, Jan. 29 at Mind Benders in Tempe.
