InMaricopa readers voted in droves in this week’s poll, with 717 answering the question, “Is PHX Surf Park, proposed in Maricopa, a good idea?”

A lot of you think it is – and a lot of you disagree.

Those who said, “Yes, it will be an economic engine,” registered 49.2% with 353 votes. Conversely, 46%, or 330 respondents, said, “No, it will use too much water and increase traffic.”

Just a smattering of voters either didn’t know (3.63%/26 votes) or did not have an opinion (1.12%/8 votes).

The proposed park features a host of amenities including a hotel, RV park, tiny-house village, retail shops, restaurants, concert venue and lazy river. The centerpieces of the attraction are two proposed “surf lagoons” of about five acres each.

Each lagoon would be the equivalent of about 18 typical Maricopa homes – and the lots they sit on – at the city’s medium-density housing rate of 3.5 homes per acre.

Water usage at the park has not yet been determined. Maricopa has a guaranteed annual water supply of approximately 23,000 acre-feet but uses less than one-third of that – about 7,000 acre-feet – annually, according to figures from Global Water.
