ADOT puts 42 mobile photo enforcement units on I-10 and I-40 today

With the start of the long Thanksgiving holiday travel period, the Arizona Department of Public Safety, in partnership with Operation CARE (Combined Accident Reduction Effort), will place 42 mobile photo enforcement units along Interstate 10 and Interstate 40 in Arizona. These mobile units will be placed every 20 miles along these designated interstates (from border to border) to help slow drivers down. These mobile photo enforcement units will be in operation from 3 p.m. until 11 p.m. on Wednesday, November 26.

The mobile photo enforcement units will supplement the efforts of DPS Officers on the road that will be looking for impaired drivers, aggressive drivers and tired drivers. In addition, officers will be enforcing safety belt laws and doing their own speed enforcement. This unique effort is part of a national push by Operation CARE to help save lives during the long holiday weekend.

Last year during the long Thanksgiving weekend 16 people were killed in 14 fatal motor vehicle collisions statewide. That includes both surface streets and state highways. Exactly half of the 14 fatal collisions involved alcohol.

Activations and citation data from this intensive eight-hour statewide photo enforcement effort will be available on Tuesday, December 2.

“Photo enforcement is designed to help slow people down so that fewer serious injury and fatal collisions occur. After all, speed is often the primary or secondary factor in such collisions. Our ultimate goal at DPS is zero fatalities, and this is a big step in the right direction,” said Roger Vanderpool, director of the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
