Sunday’s “hard landing” of an MV-22B Osprey in Hawaii has resulted in the death of a Maricopa Marine.

According to a press release from the U.S. Marine Corps, Lance Cpl. Matthew J. Determan, 21, listed by the U.S. Marine Corps as being from Maricopa, was the second man to die from the incident that injured 20 others at Training Area Bellows.

Determan was based at Camp Pendleton in California with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit. He was an infantry rifleman assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines.

The 15th MEU departed San Diego May 10 on a seven-month deployment to the Pacific Command and Central Command areas of operation. The unit was conducting routine sustainment training at the time of the accident.

One Marine, Lance Cpl. Joshua Barron, 24, of Spokane, Washington, died Sunday. Determan’s death was announced Tuesday night.

"Our country and our Corps are poorer for his loss, but his example will continue to inspire us," Col. Vance L. Cryer, the commander of the 15th MEU, said in the release.

The cause of the incident is under investigation. There was a fire aboard the aircraft, but it has not been determined whether it was a cause of the problem or a result of the hard landing.
