Auditions slated for community theater production

In theatrical circles, “the play’s the thing.” OLC School for the Arts hopes to bring that same spirit to the residents of Maricopa with its New Community Theatre Group.

“Our goal is to bring community theatre to the city of Maricopa,” said Carrie Vargas, director of OLC School for the Arts. “It is local theatre productions performed by local residents.

The first offering will be Oscar’s Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest.”

Vargas says Wilde’s masterpiece is probably the most famous of all comedies. The plot revolves around the most ingenious case of “manufactured” mistaken identity ever put into a play, she said. The production includes five men and four women and will be directed by Vargas. Actors ages 16 and up are encouraged to audition.

“We are looking for talented, passionate actors to join our production,” Vargas said. “This show has a small cast, but it is big on fun.

Auditions will be held Feb. 25, 7:30 to 9 p.m., Feb 26 from 5 to 8 p.m. and Feb 27 from 2 to 5 p.m. Actors should come prepared with a 1-2 minute comedic monologue (please nothing from the show). Callbacks will be March 1 from 7 to 9 p.m.

Auditions are by appointment only, so actors who are interested in the production should call 520-568-6817 or e-mail [email protected] for a rehearsal time.

The show is scheduled to perform April 9, 10, 16 and 17 and will include matinee performances on Saturdays. There is no cost to audition or perform in this show.

“Proceeds from ticket sales will go toward future productions and scholarships for students to take classes from the school for the arts who cannot afford to pay for them on their own,” Vargas said. “Maricopa has a lot of talented people in it. We have a great opportunity to showcase that talent while providing local performances to the community.”

“As facilities continue to be constructed, and as partnerships with city and businesses begin to flourish, we will be able to do larger scale productions and bring together a strong community theatre program.”
