Benefit golf tournaments tee off in May

Next month, there are several golf tournaments in Maricopa, presenting residents with an opportunity to hit the links while supporting a cause.

Below is information on the tournaments:

Maricopa Rotary Club – May 8

The Rotary Club, the oldest community support organization in Maricopa, will be holding its benefit golf tournament Friday, May 8, at the Southern Dunes Golf Club.

The cost is $95 per player and includes range balls, barbecue lunch, shirt and a round of golf. Proceeds from the tournament will go to benefit Rotary Club projects, such as the Rotary Pool and Park.

CAC Vaquero Athletics – May 8

The Central Arizona College Vaquero Foundation Golf Tournament is also scheduled for Friday, May 8, at the Southern Dunes Golf Club.

The four-person best-ball scramble format will begin at 2 p.m. with a shotgun start. The cost of the event is $100 per player and includes greens fees, golf cart, a fajita buffet and practice balls. Proceeds go to help sponsor CAC athletics.

“This is a terrific golf course and we are expecting to have just a great time with friends and members of the community,” said Jeff Thies, CAC director of athletics.

F.O.R. Maricopa food bank – May 9

The F.O.R. Maricopa food bank will hold its first golf tournament on Saturday, May 9, at the Duke at Rancho El Dorado.

The event will not raise funds to help stock the food bank’s shelves during the summer months and purchase a refrigerated truck.

The entry fee of $100 per player includes a round of golf with cart, lunch, a goody bag, golf games, a poker hand for a chance to win a Las Vegas weekend, a raffle ticket for a 46-inch LCD television and a shot at a hole-in-one prize of a new Volkswagen.

Ray Morrow Foundation – May 15

The Ray Morrow Foundation will be hosting its inaugural benefit golf tournament, the Southern Dunes Golf Classic, on Friday, May 15, at Southern Dunes.

Cost for the tournament is $100 per person and includes a Southern Dunes hat, gift certificate for a free golf club, gift bag, barbecue lunch and a round of golf.

The Ray Morrow Foundation was established to provide resources to people in less-fortunate circumstances in Maricopa. Morrow, a local real estate agent, died last August in a car crash.

Maricopa Republic Club – May 16

The Maricopa Republican Club is holding its second annual golf tournament Saturday, May 16, at the Duke at Rancho El Dorado.

The price of a golf package is $125 and includes greens fee, cart, range balls, goody bag and lunch.

Proceeds from the tournament will go to benefit Pet Social Worker, the planting of trees throughout the community and to provide scholarships for city sports leagues and programs for underprivileged youths. Donations of canned goods will be collected for the F.O.R Maricopa food bank.

“This is shaping up to be a great event, with many prominent Republicans from Arizona taking part,” said Brenda Hermanson, Maricopa Republican Club president.
