Boy Scouts building flagpole for Pacana Park

Maricopa Boy Scout Troop 933 wants to build the city of Maricopa a flagpole.

The 50-foot flagpole will be located in Pacana Park where currently there is no flagpole.

Gerry Hahn, committee chairman for the troop, said the Boy Scouts decided to build the pole for the city as a way of saying thank you for all of the support the city gives the troop.

“The city lets us set up booths at city events and will cut through the red tape if we need a building to host events,” Hahn said.

However, the troop will not be able to build the pole without the support of the community. The cost of a 50-foot flagpole is nearly $8,000.

“We just don’t have that kind of money to lay out,” Hahn said.

In order to raise that money the scouts will be securing two bronze plaques to the base of the flagpole. Those individuals or groups interested in having their names engraved on the plaques will be charged a fee.

“A lot of people like to see their name engraved on something that will be there for a lifetime,” Hahn said.

One of these plaques will be 16 inches by 20 inches and inscribed on this plaque will be the names of the three major sponsors of the project and a message stating that the scouts presented the pole to the city.

The other plaque will be 30 inches by 30 inches and will solely feature the names of donors.

There are four different donation levels ranging from $50 to $300.

The scouts will do all of the construction themselves under the supervision of trained professionals.

“Building a flagpole this size is a lot of work; it is much more complicated than just sticking a pole in the ground,” Hahn said.

The troop hopes to have the project completed in time to present the pole to the city at Founders Day. Once the project is complete the city will take over all maintenance.
