Canadian club, anyone?

Upon cleaning her hands in the washroom the young lady walked past the chesterfield and out the front door.

Confused?

Don’t worry the verbiage is from a group of some 2,000 Maricopa residents Ashlee Atkins hopes to gather into a new club, Canadians. “There are so many Canadians in town that don’t know anyone or need help adjusting to their new home,” Atkins said. “I thought it would be great to start a club to bring them together.

Atkins is a native of Alberta, Canada, and moved to Maricopa five years ago after a brief stint in Utah. “I had the option to go somewhere warmer through my job and chose Maricopa,” she said. “It is a great community.”

During the first year living in the city Atkins got to know many of the people in the community and its leaders, and she said her love for her newfound home grew every day.

However, something was missing.

Wanting a connection to her Canadian heritage, to re-establish that bond and help other Canadians feel the same sense of community she did in Maricopa, Atkins set out to launch a Canadian club in the city. However, due to time constraints, she was not able to get the idea off the ground until nearly four years later.

“We hosted our first meeting last week at Teakwood’s and hope to have many more in the future,” she said. Akins’ plan for the club is to host a minimum of one social event a month for her maple leaf brethren, in addition to offering advice and companionship.

“We are an extremely friendly group of people and encourage anyone interested to join our group,” she said.
