Four candidates are seeking two seats on the Maricopa City Council when citizens vote in the General Election May 20.
One Council candidate from the primary, Marquisha Griffin, earned a seat without going to the runoff election, as did the mayoral candidate, Anthony Smith, who is now Maricopa’s mayor-elect (see “Update: Griffin secures Council seat; Brown, Dunn, Diedrich, Haddad advance to general“).
Each candidate was asked to answer the following question: Do you have a specific promise you care to make – on the record – as to what you will accomplish during your term if elected?
Here is how they responded:
Marvin Brown: If I am elected, I promise that I will unselfishly pursue the proper mix of economic growth opportunities that will be sustainable through the best and worst of times.
Councilman Will Dunn: I promise that if elected, I will continue to speak the truth, demand accountability and give the citizens of Maricopa their loudest voice in our government. I will keep fighting to find solutions to the traffic problems, continue building our employment base and keep encouraging the strengthening of our schools. I am committed to public safety, a strong Parks and Recreation program and a community where are children can be inspired.
Councilman Kelly Haddad: The first thing that the members of this community need to realize is that as a councilman, you are one of seven. It would be foolish of me to promise anything other than I will continue to be accessible to listen to what the community wants and promise that I will continue to fight for that. My cell phone number is (520) 251-7303. Please feel free to call with your concerns; otherwise my vote simply becomes what I want, and that is not why you will elect me. You will elect me to be your voice.
Carl Deidrich: Candidate declined to comment.
