Mayor Nancy Smith, Vice Mayor Rich Vitiello, Councilmember Vincent Manfredi and Chief of Police Mark Goodman spoke at town hall event at Province Community Center on April 28. Transportation, public safety, economic development and infrastructure were among the topics discussed with the approximately 200 residents in attendance.

The city’s communication with the state’s Department of Public Safety and Department of Transportation was one of the first subjects Smith touched on. The mayor discussed funding and plans for changes at all major traffic lights on State Route 347, north of the city boundary.

“Riggs Road overpass is actually currently funded. It is currently in design, and they plan that it will be out of design by the end of the year,” Smith said. “Riggs Road intersection is the No. 4 worst intersection in the state of Arizona … By eliminating the intersection there, it will help eliminate traffic accidents.”

Smith noted DPS has increased trooper presence on SR 347 in response to a study on the road.

“The bottom line of that road-safety analysis was that the behavior on (SR) 347 is worse than they have ever seen anywhere else,” Smith said.

Vincent Manfredi is a co-owner of InMaricopa.
