The Maricopa City Council recently voted unanimously to confirm Keith Betsuie as Maricopa’s tribal liaison.

The role of the tribal liaison is to be the main point of contact for both the Ak-Chin and Gila River Indian Communities. This includes issues concerning tribal-city relations, development, transportation and planning.

Betsuie has been working for the city of Maricopa for more than two years.

Previously, Betsuie was a legislative associate in Washington, D.C., working on transportation issues related to the Indian Reservation Roads Program and TEA-21, Transportation Equity Act,0 funding.

In addition, Betsuie advocated for Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act funding and participated in reviewing the American Indian Probate Reform Act of 2004.

Having grown up on the Navajo Reservation in Kayenta, during which time he returned each weekend to visit family, Betsuie has first-hand knowledge of reservation life and appreciates the traditional Native American lifestyle, which makes him qualified for this role.
