City’s unemployment rate up slightly in February

Maricopa continued to follow the state trend in February when the city posted a slight increase in the unemployment rate.

The jump from 10.4 percent of the available workforce unemployed in January to 10.7 percent in February marks 10 consecutive months in which the city’s rate has remained constant or increased. Countywide, the unemployment rate increased from 9.4 percent to 9.6 percent, and statewide moved from 7.2 percent to 7.4 percent.

According to numbers released by the Arizona Department of Commerce, Maricopa’s available workforce from January to February decreased by four people to a total of 19,075.

The department releases unemployment numbers around the 20th of each month for the month prior.
