Clydesdales make appearance at Bashas’

The parking lot of the Maricopa Bashas’ was transformed into a sea of “oohs and aahs” as the world-famous Budweiser Anheuser-Busch Clydesdales made an appearance on the site Thursday afternoon.

In total, eight of the majestic horses, along with the Budweiser coach and a tail-wagging Dalmatian, made their presence felt.

“This is a great way for us to do some promotion in the local area,” said Tom Dowell, operations team leader for Golden Eagle Distributors, the company that supplies Budweiser products to Maricopa.

The Clydesdales made the stop while on their way to take part in the Fiddler Jam in Casa Grande this weekend.

The horses travel in style in customized, air-conditioned trailers and are treated to their  favorite munchies and other amenities. “They don’t even realize they are moving the trailers, they are so comfortable,” Dowell said.

Each Clydesdale weighs more than 2,000 pounds and stands over six feet tall at the shoulders. And they’re strong, too. Just the harness they wear weighs more than 70 pounds.

The horses make their home in the beer manufacturer’s home city of St. Louis on a farm with more than 100 head of the distinctive beauties
