Dailey honored by ASU as Outstanding Scholar-Citizen

The School of Public Affairs at Arizona State University has selected Maricopa Assistant to the City Manager Nicole Dailey as the 2008-2009 MPA/MPP Outstanding Scholar-Citizen.

Eligibility for the award included being one of approximately 30 School of Public Affairs graduates between August 2008 and May 2009, a GPA of 3.8 or higher, faculty recommendation(s), submission of a résumé and a personal statement, indicating citizen contributions at the university or community level in either a paid or volunteer capacity.

In her personal statement Dailey wrote: “My favorite part of being assistant to the city manager is working with the citizens. Civic engagement and service to my community is my life work, and I do it because I love it. I have truly put into action the principles and practices of the MPA program for the betterment of my community, and I am fulfilled every day knowing that I have the best job in the world – a job of service.”

Dailey first came to the city of Maricopa as a planning department intern in August 2006. She was promoted to the positions of administrative assistant and then management assistant, becoming an assistant to City Manager Kevin Evans in January 2008. Her primary responsibilities have included the redevelopment and sustainability initiatives, annexation, strategic planning, special events, internal efficiency and budgetary affairs. She has also served as secretary for the Planning & Zoning Commission.

School of Public Affairs Senior Specialist Chris Hiryak informed Dailey of her selection.
“I want to thank you for your contributions and leadership and congratulate you for winning this award,” said Hiryak. “The awards committee was very impressed by your academic and professional record.”

Dailey graduated from ASU with a bachelor’s degree in Justice Studies, summa cum laude, in 2004. In August 2008 she received a Master of Public Administration degree.

The Outstanding Scholar-Citizen award was presented at the School of Public Affairs luncheon on Wednesday, April 29.
