Maricopa Fire Department responded to two rollover accidents this morning, which resulted in two fatalities plus six injuries.

The first occurred at 10:53 a.m. on Interstate 8 approximately 32 miles east of Gila Bend at mile post 148.7. Two adults were killed in the accident and one 17-year-old male was flown to Banner Good Samaritan Trauma Center with serious injuries. Both westbound lanes were closed, and will re-open once the scene is cleared, according to Maricopa Fire spokesman Brad Pitassi.

About an hour later, Maricopa Fire responded to another single vehicle rollover, this one on State route 238 west of Mobile. The vehicle was on its roof and all five passengers, including three children, were transported to Chandler Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

It is not yet known if weather was a factor in either accident.

Pitassi called it a “tragic start to the holiday weekend” and encourages everyone to drive safely – and appropriately for the weather conditions – and to always buckle up and use a designated driver if drinking. “Enjoy the holiday weekend, but safety is of utmost concern… and should always be the highest priority.”
