Enjoy coffee and conversation with friends at the library

What are you doing Tuesday afternoon? How about some coffee, cookies and the opportunity to chat with old friends while meeting new ones?

The Friends of the Maricopa Public Library host a free coffee at the library every Tuesday afternoon from 2 to 3:30 in the library’s meeting room.

Many of those who attended the coffees have become members of the Friends group, whose members volunteer at the library or serve in other capacities to support the library’s programs, including a semi-annual used book sale.  However, the coffees are open to the public, with no membership requirement for anyone.

“The coffees are a great opportunity to meet new people, have interesting conversations, and, of course, get involved in volunteering. It’s a good release,” said Cornelia Bouyea. She started attending the Tuesday sessions and eventually became an active member of the Friends of the Library.

There’s plenty of time to look for books or videos before or after the coffee time. Residents can also sign up for the summer reading program, which runs through Aug. 7. The program is open to anyone with a Maricopa Public Library card. The goal is for each participant is to read at least 30 hours; then readers are eligible to enter the grand prize drawing. Each additional 10 hours of reading time earns another entry.

Those with access to the Internet are encouraged to register for the program online at http://host9.evanced.info/maricopa/sr/homepage.asp. In addition to logging their reading hours online, they can also rate books, write book reviews and read other participants’ book reviews.

Those without access to the Internet can fill out a paper registration form available at the library. Participants who choose to register this way will record reading hours with paper logs, also available at the library.

The Maricopa Public Library is located at 41600 W. Smith-Enke Rd. Its regular hours are:

Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday:  9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Monday, Wednesday:  12 p.m. – 8 p.m. (closed Sunday)
