Medical examiners last night released autopsy reports to InMaricopa that divulge new details about how a child was murdered in the Maricopa Meadows Nov. 22.
Esteban Valenzuela, 16, died of a single gunshot that ripped through his heart, according to the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office documents.
The bullet entered near Valenzuela’s left shoulder and pierced through his upper lung, his heart, diaphragm and liver. The bullet was recovered from his colon, according to the autopsy report.
The report states Valenzuela’s body was found on the sidewalk (Pinal County Attorney Brad Miller had said that he was shot inside his car) and was suffering from “significant blood loss” before he was transported to a Valley hospital.
He was pronounced deceased within five minutes of arrival, according to the new report.
Valenzuela and his accomplices were robbing 16-year-old Sergio Michael Munoz, a cannabis dealer, when someone in Valenzuela’s group shot and killed him, Miller indicated in a recent interview.
Prosecutors are still theorizing about why the drug deal went wrong, who was the gunman and why he turned the gun on Valenzuela, apparently an accomplice.
Isaiah Bandin, 15, and Eliot Jackson, 17 are due to stand trial as adults on charges of first-degree murder and armed robbery in connection to Valenzuela’s slaying, according to PCSC documents. There is reason to believe Bandin and Valenzuela may have been familially related.
Maricopa police arrested two other juveniles, a 15-year-old girl and 16-year-old boy, with ties to the murder but their names and charges will only be unsealed if and when prosecutors decide to charge them as adults in the case.
Bandin’s next hearing is scheduled for Feb. 24. Jackson’s next court date was not available this morning.
