First annual Maricopa Mutt March scheduled for November

30

The Maricopa Mutt March Planning committee has been working since last fall to plan the First Annual Maricopa Mutt March, which will take place in Maricopa Meadows on Sunday, November 5, 2006. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the City of Maricopa Parks, Recreation, and Libraries (PRL) Department for a special dog park fund.

Registrants may choose between taking their dogs on a short march (.25 mile) and a long march (2.5 miles). There will be a pet expo, rescue groups, demonstrations by the Pinal County K-9 unit and Sonoran Search and Rescue, as well as contests for mutts and their families. There will also be food for sale so families can picnic near the lake, if they like.

Maricopa residents Kristen Carr of Well-Minded Pets, Kimberly Diedrich of Home is Where the Hound is and Sarah Jones created the Maricopa Mutt March in response to their own desire for an off-leash dog park and increasing community demand for a facility of this sort. The planning committee has expanded to include seven members, subdivided into task-related subcommittees. Additional community members have volunteered to work on these committees and also to volunteer on event day.

The Maricopa Mutt March planning committee is seeking local sponsors, and is distributing a multilevel sponsorship offer to the community. Imagewerks Design, owned by Carl Diedrich, has donated all of the graphics for the event, including a comprehensive web site.

The Maricopa Mutt March has the support of the City of Maricopa, and, more specifically, PRL Director Marty McDonald. With the support of the city and the vast dog-loving community in Maricopa, the event is expected to be a huge success both as a fun-filled family event and a fundraiser to give Maricopa dogs a place to let loose.
