Maricopa’s Community Library is supported and assisted in its programs by a group of volunteers known as the Friends of the Library.

In August the Friends received a donation from the Pima Butte MOMS Club in the amount of $750. Ramsey’s American Grill will be presenting the Friends with a check for $750 from the Great American Barbeque on July 4. On Sept. 29 a recognition event will be held for those who have donated to the Friends in the past year. Additional donors were the other MOMS Clubs in Maricopa, Native New Yorker and Bashas’ as well as the Maricopa Unified School District, which provided the Friends’ meeting place.

Coffees on the Porch will resume at the library on Oct. 16 for those who want to share some conversation with Friends while they are visiting the library.

The Friends will have a booth at Founders Day to showcase Maricopa’s definitive history “Reflections on a Desert Town,” written by Patricia Brock and republished through the efforts of the Friends and various donors who will be honored at a later date. Brock will do a signing of her book during the festivities.

Used book sales, sponsored by the Friends, are held semi-annually. The next sale is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 20, from 8 a.m. until noon at Santa Rosa Elementary School.
Books will be $5 per bag with children’s books, videos, CDs, etc. priced at $1 each. Anyone with book donations for the sale may drop them off after 6 p.m. Friday at the school.

A new project for the group is providing books for soldiers deployed outside the U.S. The groups will be taking donations to cover shipping costs.

Experience Maricopa, suggested by Mary Lou Smith, is another new program in the planning stages. Monthly field trips to places like Shamrock Dairy, the Maricopa Agricultural Center, the cotton gin and Global Water will provide residents the opportunity to “experience” Maricopa.

The book club, which now has 10 members, meets the fourth Monday of the month. The Aug. selection is “The Aguero Sisters” by Christina Garcia. For information contact Gerry Ryan at (520) 568-3591.

Why not come and join the Friends of the Maricopa Community Library? Their next meeting is Monday, Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. in the Pima Butte Elementary School library.

The Friends of the Library meet on the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. in the Pima Butte Elementary School library.
