One giant garage sale to help many

If your car isn’t fitting in your garage, the city’s Parks and Recreation Department has just the thing for you – a community garage sale.

For $10, this Saturday a person can rent two parking spaces at Pacana Park.

Participants get to keep all they make in the 9 a.m. to 2 p.m garage sale, and, better yet — depending on your point of view — for anything not sold, Parks and Rec staff has arranged for Deseret Industries in Mesa and Big Brothers and Big Sisters to tote off the rest.

The idea came about because Monte Cowing, recreation leader, and Rocky Brown, youth coordinator, who both run many of the city’s summer youth rec programs, wanted a little more spending money for field trips this summer.

And, “Because my garage is full,” Cowing said.

Parks and Rec is partnering with Resale for Life (which leads up to the May 19 Relay for Life) and the Chances for Children Spring Fling 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Community of Hope Church/Leading Edge Academy Parking lot, 189700 N. Porter Road.

“I wanted to do four field trips,” Cowing said. “We have one and with this we might get one more.”

The kids in the Summer Fun and Fitness Camp are looking for “treasure” at the Cerreta Candy Company in Glendale during a pirate day, Cowing said.

Interested people can register at City Hall, 45145 W Madison Ave., or contact Brown at 520-316-6835 or [email protected].
