Of the 13 eating establishments inspected by the Pinal County Health Department in July, only Native New Yorker and Sunrise Café were cited for violations.

Both restaurants received an S (Satisfactory) on their inspections with Native New Yorker receiving citations for an individual putting on gloves before washing their hands, an improperly functioning thermometer on a refrigeration unit, missing expiration dates on food and the use of improper cooling techniques.

Sunrise Café was marked down for storing raw chicken above tomatoes, several food items being stored at two to four degrees above the maximum allowable temperature and improper cooling techniques.

The health department conducts random inspections aimed at ensuring that all the proper safety steps are being taken to maintain consumer safety, county officials said.

To ensure consumer safety, the department can issue violations that are either critical or non-critical. Critical violations must be fixed within 10 days and affect a location’s score. Non-critical violations must be fixed within 90 days.

Grades are based on the number of violations with an E, for excellent, being the highest possible score an establishment can receive. Other scores are an S for satisfactory, U for unacceptable and an N for needs improvement.

In addition to Native New Yorker and Sunrise Café, the department inspected and handed out perfect scores to Bashas’, Express Stop, La Roca Night Club, Carl’s Jr, Jack in the Box, Rice Garden, Mando’s Mexican Food, Baskin Robbins, Domino’s Pizza, Arby’s and Great Wall Chinese.
