Hermanson seeks spot as county Republican Party chairman

Maricopa Republican Club President Marty Hermanson hopes to take a step up the political ladder this January.

Hermanson is running for the chairmanship of the Pinal County Republican Party.

He said he feels change is necessary to facilitate a stronger party presence in the county.

His fellow Republicans will decide on Jan.10 if he is the right person for the job. At that time precinct committee members (PCM) vote on who they feel should be in charge of their party.

Currently in Pinal County there are 80 precinct members. Hermanson thinks that number is too low.

“We have the potential to have 448 members, yet we only have 80. It is not acceptable,” Hermanson said.

A PCM is basically a ground solider in the Republican Party. They push their party’s agenda to the voters, encourage people to register to vote and garner overall support for Republican candidates during election periods.

To become a PCM, a person must collect signatures and be approved by voters.

“The reason we have so few PCM members is that we have not created enough tasks for them,” Hermanson said.

The seat Hermanson is running for has a two-year term. Tommy Tucker is currently filling the position. Tucker took over in October 2007 after then-chairman David West was removed from office.
