Home Depot announces opening date, and it’s only a month away

Get ready to push orange carts up and down aisles soon.

After months of watching the building go up, The Home Depot finally confirmed the grand opening of its store on Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway for Thursday, Sep. 26, according to company spokesperson Lauren Anderson.

She did not confirm information about store hours, but did say the store will host a “neighborhood night” on Sep. 25, “which will include refreshments, games, giveaways and kids workshops.”

The building supply store’s opening has been years in the making. Plans were originally announced in 2007, but the company later shelved those plans because of the Great Recession.

Whispers of the home improvement giant coming to town re-emerged last April and construction began in December.

At the time, then-City Manager Rick Horst said the store’s arrival indicated a big step for Maricopa.

“Home Depot is a significant retailer for us and, of course, they will attract others,” he said. “If you look around the greater Phoenix area and you see one of these big boxes pop up, a lot of other businesses like to sit next to them.”

That could mean more big bucks for the city. For example, Horst estimated Home Depot “will generate about $1 million a year (in tax revenue) for the city” during a presentation to the Maricopa Chamber of Commerce earlier this year.

Indeed, a Lowe’s Home Improvement store is expected to go up on property off John Wayne Parkway at Honeycutt Avenue.
