Local photographer Amy Jamieson received special honors in the Wedding & Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) 2010 Awards of Excellence competition held in Las Vegas last month.

Jamieson, a Maricopa resident who owns and operates Amy Jamieson Photography, received an Accolade of Excellence in the premier image, 16×20 category.

The 2010 competition included 3,389 prints in 18 different categories, submitted by photographers from all over the world, including China, Russia and Australia.

Jamieson’s subject was Maricopa High School senior Reed Peavler. Peavler is in the MHS band and plays both bass sax and the guitar.

“I asked him to put his pick in his mouth and jam for me,” said Jamieson. The result was her photo, entitled “Jazz Session.”

The photo of Peavler received high enough marks to ‘hang’ with an award of photographic excellence. “We receive merit points each time we enter and ‘hang,’” Jamieson explained.

Awards are presented annually at the largest trade show for professional photographers in the U.S.
