Vintage Partners and the city of Maricopa broke ground today on the 2.44-acre development that will be home to at least four new eateries. Maricopa Station, located north of CVS on John Wayne Parkway, has already inked deals with Chipotle, Starbucks, Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers and Jersey Mike’s Subs.

The new project will have a 7,800 square-foot multi-tenant building and a 3,300 square-foot, drive-through restaurant.

“I think this new development is a wonderful amenity,” City Manager Gregory Rose said. “It’s an opportunity for residents to stay home and shop local.”

Mayor Christian Price and the developers, Walter Crutchfield, Mark Ortman and Monty Ortman, spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony.

“Thank you, Maricopa. You will always have a special place in my heart,” Monty Ortman said. “I look forward to continuing to develop this city.”

Monty Ortman and his partner, Mike Ingram, made up El Dorado Holdings and are largely credited with being the pioneers of Maricopa’s growth, lobbying for the expansion of Maricopa Road and developing much of Maricopa’s agricultural land.

“I remember farmers came up to me when I was meeting with my partner at Headquarters 29 years ago and asked why us why we hadn’t gotten Maricopa Road built,” Ortman said. “I looked at my partner and said, ‘Why not, let’s do it; it’s no big deal.’ Well, it was a big deal. … It was well worth it though. I drive on that road every day now and it helped pave the way for development in Maricopa.”

“Development is a wonderful thing, but it is not easy,” Price said. “It takes a great deal of cooperation, collaboration and effort between the city and a developer to allow us to build things that will last long after we are all gone.”
