Leon Potter has been named United Way Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program manager for Pinal County.

Beverly Prueter, United Way of Pinal County executive director, said Potter brings many years of experience with the program, becoming a VITA volunteer while in the U.S. Navy.

He received training from the IRS, including receipt of the enrolled agent designation in 2008. This designation means he has demonstrated special competence in tax matters, applied for enrollment and been issued an enrollment card.

Potter, who is married with three children, first became a VITA volunteer in 1999 in California, and was certified by the IRS to prepare taxes for fellow servicemen and women in his duty station. Today, the VITA program is sponsored by local IRS partners such as United Way of Pinal County, and serves low to moderate income families, disabled and retired persons and those who speak languages other than English in the household.
