Pinal County leaders appointed Cobblestone Farms resident William Lee “Bill” Griffin as constable for the Precinct 4 Western Pinal Justice Court in Maricopa.
Griffin, a retired sheriff’s deputy who serves as a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints leader, was appointed and sworn in Wednesday to fill the position left open after Constable Glenn Morrison of Rancho El Dorado resigned effective Sept. 30.
Griffin’s appointment to the office runs through Dec. 31, 2026, at which time he can choose to run for the office.
The supervisors also considered another constable application from another Maricopa resident Christian Glover, the husband of newly elected Justice of the Peace in Precinct 4, Patricia Glover. He manages Maricopa’s legal document preparer company.
Griffin, age 69 and who lost the 2018 race when he ran against Morrison by just 57 votes, said he has already made contact with Peace Justice Glover and will be trained by Casa Grande-based Chief Constable Scott Elliott, who oversees Pinal County constables.
“Campaigning is pretty gruesome” Griffin told InMaricopa. “I don’t know why people do it.”
Griffin said he applied for the existing opening right after Morrison resigned.
He said he looks forward to learning how the county constable system wants the civil court “paper to flow.”
The position is all things civil and serving papers that tell people when they need to go to court for civil matter in connection with lawsuits and legal challenges, he said.
Griffin has been a resident of Maricopa since 2007.
“With over 24 years of experience as a deputy sheriff at the Orange County [Calif.] Sheriff’s Department, I bring a wealth of knowledge in law enforcement that aligns perfectly with the duties of a constable,” Griffin told the county supervisors in his application cover letter. “I am particularly drawn to this role because it allows me to give service the community, which has been the cornerstone of my career and in my personal life. During my tenure as a deputy sheriff, I developed a strong understanding of serving civil process, preparing reports, and executing court orders. I am skilled in writing accurate reports and have a keen attention to detail, essential for completing affidavits of service and filing documents with the courts.”
