Maricopa police arrested a 31-year-old man early Saturday morning in the Homestead North neighborhood in connection with a suspected domestic violence incident.

Officers responded to a domestic violence call just before 4 a.m. June 17 at a home near Grantham Road and Thornberry Lane. An unidentified caller said a woman walked up to their door and requested help after the woman’s boyfriend allegedly hit her.

In a probable cause statement, the woman said her boyfriend, Stephen Mejia, strangled and punched her during an argument in her child’s room. The woman told police she ran out of the home and hid in a truck bed until she felt safe to seek help.

Officers found red marks on the woman’s neck and a swollen lip, as well as other injuries on her face, ears and hands.

Police did not provide a statement from Mejia about the incident.

Mejia was arrested and booked into Pinal County Jail on domestic violence charges in assault, aggravated assault and disorderly conduct. A hearing date was not announced.
