Maricopa businesses supporting youth, troops

Sunday was a busy day for Maricopa’s businesses working to help local youth and our troops.

At Maricopa Self Storage, it was “customer appreciation day” as managers, Robert and Kathy Berrington, cooked up hot dogs, served cold drinks, provided a jumper and helped with a raffle to support Maricopa Little League.

“Robert has been a sponsor of our league,” said David Chavez, president of Maricopa Little League. “This just goes to show what kind of guy he is, and we’ve been very much appreciative of his support. The money raised goes to help pay for uniforms, hats and trophies for the kids.”

The Little League will continue to sell raffle tickets through the second week of June and are working to include a few more giveaways from businesses. So far, Diamondback suite tickets and round-trip tickets on Southwest Airlines are some of the big prizes they are raffling off. Arena Sports Grill held a car wash to raise money for care packages for the troops. They also had a raffle that included other local business support and contributions. They were washing cars all day, and some businesses came in with their fleet vehicles to help with the cause.

“My arms got a little sore, but all I had to do was think about who we were doing it for,” said Porscha Gray, assistant manager. “They don’t quit on us, and we weren’t going to quit either.”

AutoZone held a car wash for Cub Scout Troop 997. They will also host a car wash next weekend for the Ram’s football program.

Fundraising continues today. Native New Yorker will be donating 20 percent of the food bill to anybody who mentions “Maricopa Cougars.” The Maricopa Cougars are the youth football team that has gone undefeated and is heading off for tournament play in San Diego at the end of June.

“It’s a great thing Native is doing. They’ve helped with car washes, and many thanks to them,” said Erik Swanson, sponsor coordinator.  “We’ll be coordinating some more events with them as we are hoping to help with all the travelling expenses for the team as they represent Maricopa on a national stage.” To donate to the Maricopa Cougars, email [email protected].
