The Maricopa Historical Society hosted its third annual golf tournament at The Duke at Rancho El Dorado Oct. 26 and raised nearly $7,700, an increase of more than $2,500 over the 2012 event.

The fundraising goal is to raise money toward building a brick-and-mortar museum for the city of Maricopa.

“We’re close, maybe a year away,” said golf tournament committee chairman Brenda Hermanson. “We need to show our community the rich history we have.”

Sponsors of the event included Wal-Mart, Ak-Chin Indian Community, Dave’s Collision, Maricopa Ace Hardware, Blue Skies Realty-Suzie Rotter, Pinal County Attorney Lando Voyles, Sheriff Paul Babeu, Farmers Insurance-Scott Summers, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Orbitel, Engineered with Layton, Brenda and Marty Hermanson, and Brenda and Greg Campbell.

“I had a great time,” Mayor Christian Price said.

Babeu’s team took first place in the shotgun scramble and second place was won by the Ak-Chin Community team. Jim Kimble was the winner of the longest drive contest.

“We’re happy to see the community coming together,” Hermanson said. “We’re already looking forward to next year’s golf tournament; it gets bigger and better every year.”

“It was a wonderful golf tournament,” said Maricopa Police Chief Steven Stahl.

The purpose of the Maricopa Historical Society is to identify, record, collect, preserve and make available documents and artifacts of historical significance related to the people, places and events of the Maricopa, Arizona area.

The group will be hosting a Valentine’s Celebration at The Silver Spur Grill on Feb. 8; the 2013 event was sold out.
