The Maricopa Police Department has 81 employees, about 1/4 of the size of the Pasadena PD where new chief Mark Goodman was a Commander. Goodman served 28 years with Pasadena PD.

The Maricopa Police Department will receive more than $58,000 in state grants next year to further initiatives for highway safety.

The four grants from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) are for speed and traffic enforcement ($26,433), DUI/impaired driving enforcement ($20,000), occupant protection ($4,900) and pedestrian safety ($6,821), according to a department news release.

The department said the grants will help MPD build upon safety initiatives developed and implemented using past grants from GOHS.

The grant money will be used for the following initiatives:

Speed and traffic enforcement. Provides overtime for additional Selective Traffic Enforcement Program enforcement details and additional community outreach to increase awareness of traffic laws and safety tips, the purchase of radar equipment to enhance STEP enforcement activity and an LED trailer to notify motorists of their speed.

DUI/impaired driving enforcement. Provides overtime for additional DUI enforcement details.

Occupant protection. Provides overtime for additional enforcement details, promotion of passenger/child restraint safety and purchase of car seats.

Pedestrian safety. Provides overtime for additional enforcement details, promotion of bike safety and purchase of bike helmets and safety lights.

GOHS provides funding to law enforcement agencies, fire departments and non-profit organizations to increase safety on highways and roads.
