School is back in session, so there are a number of both school and youth-related activities taking place this week. Also scheduled is a Maricopa Police Department promotion ceremony, a Planning and Zoning Commission session and a monthly book club meeting.

Monday, Aug. 27: The Maricopa Book Club will meet at 6 p.m. to discuss “The Aguero Sisters” written by Cristina Garcia. This novel tells the story of two sisters who grew up in Cuba and then were separated for 30 years when one came to the United States. Book club meetings are the fourth Monday of each month in Rancho El Dorado. New members are welcome. Call Gerry Ryan (520) 568-3591 for more information and directions to her home for the meeting.

Maricopa Trailblazers 4-H will meet in the high school cafeteria at 5 p.m. for an expo of available classes in gardening, rockets, sewing, shooting, ceramics, small animals or steers–about 20 areas to choose from in all. Kids ages 5-19 can be a part of 4-H. The fee to sign up is $10 with supplies extra. The club meets monthly to update projects. Contact Janine Brown (602) 390-6963 for further information.

The Maricopa Planning and Zoning Commission will meet at 5:30 p.m. at the Global Water facility on N. Powers Parkway. Senior Planner Kazi Haque will update the commission on the status of the General Plan, and Planning Director Amy Haberbosch will present Planning Department information on procedures and timelines.

Tuesday, Aug. 28: Pima Butte Elementary School will hold an Ice Cream Social from 5 – 7 p.m. in conjunction with its curriculum night. Learn about your child’s education while having a delicious, cool treat. One scoop is $1; $2 for three scoops with free toppings from the topping bar. Anyone interested in volunteering for the event should call Christine Hasbrouck (520) 568-7077.

Maricopa Wells Middle School will also hold its Curriculum Night from 5-7 p.m. This is a drop-in event for parents to visit classrooms and see what curriculum and activities students are doing in class.

Wednesday, Aug. 29: Maricopa Wells Middle School will have a Late Start Day from 10:30 a.m. until 3:36 p.m. All buses will pick up students two hours later in the morning. Late starts are typically the last Wednesday of the month.

An informational meeting for parents whose daughters are interested in Girl Scouts will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Pima Butte Elementary School on Rancho El Dorado Parkway.

Friday, Aug. 31: In a 3 p.m. ceremony at City Hall the Maricopa Police Department will promote Detective Mary Turner to Detective Sgt., heading up criminal investigations and Lt. Richard Aguirre to Patrol Shift Commander. Aguirre is a retired Phoenix PD officer with 25 years of experience.

The Summer Snow Blast Back-to-School Dance will be held from 6 – 8 p.m. at Maricopa Wells Middle School. All students planning to attend must pre-purchase a ticket and have ID at the dance.
