Maricopa youth to have new voice in city government

Maricopa youth now have an opportunity to have their voices heard and to represent the city’s younger population through the creation of a city of Maricopa Youth Council.

“The city of Maricopa Youth Council’s overall purpose is to give teens a voice. We want to know what problems they face, what we can do to help them out and get their feedback on community issues,” said youth coordinator Rocky Brown.

Brown, who recently became part of the city’s Community Services Department, will be in charge of the young people, ages 14-18, on the new council.

“We hope to establish a diverse and knowledgeable group of kids who can develop their leadership capabilities.” Brown said.

Not only will youth council members have an opportunity to increase their civic knowledge, they will also be asked to complete an assignment given to them by members of the Maricopa City Council. This will be a hands-on experience with government for the youth council members.

Youth Council meetings will take place on a monthly basis, and members may graduate from the program by amassing a total of 300 points earned through participation and council activities. Graduates will be honored at a special ceremony at the conclusion of their time in the program.

Youth Council members will be selected through a competitive application process. The primary criterion for selection will be a demonstration of interest and intent—that the young person wants to make a difference in Maricopa. Applications will be due at the end of August, and the first Youth Council meeting will take place in September.

Brown and city staff members hope parents will discuss this new, exciting civic opportunity with their children and then encourage them to apply.

To receive an application or if there are additional questions about the city of Maricopa Youth Council, contact Brown at 520-316-6835 or [email protected].

“The city is dedicated to making Maricopa a great place to live. Our youth are an important segment of our community, and we look forward to working with them towards the achievement of that goal,” Brown said.
